A realistic 1,000 sq ft project
One thousand square feet of measured surface needs 3.14 gallons for one coat and 6.29 gallons for two. A common purchase for the two-coat case is one five-gallon pail plus two gallons, leaving about 0.71 gallon for application loss and touch-ups.
Buying and staging this quantity
Do not substitute a home's 1,000 sq ft floor listing for measured wall area. Hallways, closets, and partitions add faces that the floor number cannot reveal, while doors and cabinetry remove paintable surface.
Split the project into labeled zones and record how much each zone consumes. If the first 500 sq ft uses materially more than half the supply, recalculate before opening the final containers.

Does this mean a 1,000 sq ft house?
No. Floor area and paintable wall area are different measurements. A home advertised as 1,000 sq ft can have much more wall surface depending on its layout, ceiling height, number of rooms, and openings. As a geometry illustration, four 8-foot-high walls around a square room with roughly 6-foot sides would be near 1,000 gross sq ft before subtracting doors and windows.
What can change the answer?
- Coverage: changing from 350 to 250 sq ft per gallon raises the two-coat estimate from 6.29 to 8.80 gallons.
- Coats: two coats require twice the coverage volume of one coat.
- Surface condition: porous, rough, or unsealed surfaces usually consume more coating.
- Openings: subtract doors and windows only when they will not be painted.
