About Project Material Calculator
Project Material Calculator converts room and surface measurements into cans, boxes, bags, rolls, and estimated cost. Each calculator displays the coverage rate, coat count, allowance, and rounding used in its result.
Our editorial method
Every calculator on this site starts with standard geometry — perimeter, area, and volume formulas that have been used in construction for centuries. We use adjustable inputs (coverage rates, waste allowances, coat counts) rather than hidden constants, so you can tailor every estimate to your specific product and surface.
Our default assumptions are documented and sourced:
- Door area (21 sq ft): An editable quick-estimate shortcut, not a dimensional standard. Exact estimates should use the opening's measured width × height.
- Window area (15 sq ft): An editable quick-estimate shortcut, not a claim about an average home. Measure each opening when it materially affects the result.
- Default coverage (350 sq ft/gal): A midpoint planning example for a smooth, sealed surface. The exact product label or technical data sheet is the correct input.
- Allowance (10%): An editable planning scenario that keeps application loss and touch-up material visible rather than hiding them inside coverage.
- Container rounding: We recommend practical container combinations (e.g., 2 × 1 gallon + 1 × 1 quart instead of a single 5-gallon bucket for small jobs) based on standard paint packaging sizes in both imperial and metric systems.
Guidance is checked before publication and maintained by Project Material Calculator. When we substantively check or update formulas, assumptions, or advice, we update the "last reviewed" date on the affected page. If you spot an error or have a suggestion, we investigate reproducible reports and correct confirmed issues.

How we validate our calculators
We cross-reference our calculations against:
- Public manufacturer product pages, labels, and technical data sheets linked from the claim they support.
- Independent arithmetic checks against the worked examples shown on each page.
- Automated tests for formulas, unit conversions, rounding boundaries, invalid inputs, and documented examples.
- Reader corrections submitted with reproducible inputs, which we investigate before changing a formula or assumption.
Core calculator formulas are covered by automated regression tests that run on every build. The test suite checks documented examples and relevant behaviours such as unit conversions, rounding boundaries, and invalid inputs.

What our estimates are — and are not
Our tools are planning aids, not professional consultations. Use the results to compare quantities and costs, then check the selected product and conditions on site before buying:
- Product labels, local building requirements, site conditions, and advice from qualified professionals take priority over any calculator output.
- Actual paint usage varies by surface porosity, texture, application method, temperature, humidity, and paint quality.
- We do not accept payment or sponsorship to alter calculator formulas or favour specific products. Our recommendations are based on publicly available data and industry standards.
How we maintain this site
We review content on a regular cycle and whenever we receive user feedback. Each calculator and guide page displays its last review date. Major changes (formula updates, new features, methodology revisions) are tested against existing examples to prevent regressions.
The calculators are free to use, and their working assumptions remain visible. A review date changes only after the affected content or calculation has been checked; it is not refreshed automatically.
Advertising and monetisation
This site is supported by advertising (Google AdSense). Advertisements are clearly labelled and kept separate from calculator inputs and results. We do not use affiliate links that could influence product recommendations. For transparency: we do not currently accept direct sponsorships, paid placements, or "sponsored" calculator defaults. If this changes in the future, any sponsored content will be clearly disclosed.
Privacy and data
Calculations run in your browser, and we do not intentionally send exact room dimensions to analytics providers. Some calculators can store selected inputs in the page URL so that a result can be reloaded or shared; when that URL is requested, the query string can appear in standard hosting and security logs. We use Google Analytics and Mixpanel for opt-in usage analytics, and Google AdSense for advertising. See our privacy policy for complete details on data collection and your choices.
