How the masonry paint calculation works
Gross wall area is length × height. Subtract measured windows and doors, add the visible application allowance, and calculate every coating layer independently. Primer uses one coat when selected; finish paint uses the entered coat count. Each exact amount is divided into common 5-gallon, 1-gallon, and quart containers, or metric containers after switching units.

Standard paint versus elastomeric coating
Do not identify product type from the calculator preset. A standard exterior masonry paint and an elastomeric coating may require very different coverage and film thickness. Enter the selected product's coverage rather than changing only the number of coats. A thick coating applied too thinly may not deliver its intended performance.
Why bare masonry may need separate primer
Primer, conditioner, block filler, and finish paint are not interchangeable. Bare block may need void filling; chalking masonry may need stabilization; new stucco has cure and alkalinity requirements. The checkbox estimates quantity and cost only after the correct system has been selected.

Valspar currently lists 300–400 sq ft per gallon for one masonry, stucco and brick paint/primer product, while another coating or rougher substrate may differ. How much paint do I need for brick?
Subtract openings from measured brick wall area, add an application allowance, multiply by coats, and divide by the exact masonry coating's label coverage. Bare porous brick can cover far less per gallon than a sealed or previously painted surface.
Do I need primer before painting brick, block, or stucco?
It depends on the substrate and coating system. Bare, porous, chalking, stained, repaired, or high-pH masonry may require a compatible primer or conditioner. Follow the selected manufacturer's system instructions.
How much elastomeric coating do I need?
Use the product's stated coverage at its required film thickness. Elastomeric coatings can cover substantially less area than standard exterior paint, so do not reuse a generic wall-paint rate.
Why are primer and finish calculated separately?
They can have different coverage, coat counts, prices, and container requirements. Leftover primer cannot replace missing finish coating.
